Raw

"Eating raw pineapple fried rice. It's weird, you want some?"
"Oh...ok."

Yesterday in my sad "Wah, I miss my dog and bear!" state I went to Border's (now everything 50-70% off!) and wanted to buy the entire cookbook section (or what's left of it). Hoping my dog and bear would magically appear and save me from my cookbook hoarding frenzy I stayed there a long time. Seeing as they probably weren't coming to rescue me from myself I sat in a corner and looked up reviews (thanks Amazon!) and settled on two- a book about New Orleans food (to get me pumped for the trip) and a book with Asian raw food (to try out this whole raw food thing). Yes, I do realize these two books are completely contradictory. I also finally picked up a Cozy Hugs hippo with a belly full of lavender goodness that does give cozy hugs. I wish I could bring her everywhere.

I picked a Pineapple Fried Rice recipe from the raw food book and bought ingredients at Sprouts. Pineapple fried rice is always so pricey at Thai restaurants (like $12.95), even though regular fried rice is like one of the cheapest, easiest Asian dishes ever (so cheap in fact, the $2 they charge at Chinese restaurants is way overcharging). I was hoping to learn how to make the dish for cheap but I ended up spending $20 on groceries (don't you miss the days when your parents paid for these things? sigh, grownup days). Albeit, I did not use up all my supplies and it was a good opportunity to venture out of my mac-n-cheese-eating ways and purchase things like agave syrup, jicama, and use the bulk food area of the store.

Some things I've learned about raw food:

* The author likes raw food because heat denatures the plants natural proteins, vitamins, etc. (this makes sense to me because that's what the sun/UV rays/harmful chemicals do to your body and causes things like cancer) and getting natural water retained in her meals means she has to drink less water. I think it's interesting how some people say you extract and therefore get more nutrients out of a meal when its cooked whereas raw foodies believe in trying to leave food in a pure form.

* Whenever heating things, the author encourages using a dehydrator (is that how they make astronaut food?) and food is never heated above 104 degrees F.

* Author avoids "cooking" with grains, dairy and soy because they are usually genetically modified, experience high pesticide levels or cows are injected with antibiotics and hormones. I kind of like this because that stuff is in practically every boxed food.

* Raw food requires lots of raw (aka fresh) ingredients meaning you have to go the grocery store more than once a month. Sigh. Also, the food must be devoured immediately. (The pineapple fried rice dish I made only lasts one day. At least everything is allowed in the compost.)

* Rice does not count as raw food. How do you make Asian food, especially pineapple fried "rice" without rice??? In the recipe I made cashew "rice" by pulsing jicama, cashews and salt. I've never had jicama before, it looks like a hybrid between a potato and a brown rock. It's a root that is crunchy like water chestnut. Don't try to peel it (I had to make a mess and watch a youtube video). Slice away the hard exterior with a big knife.

{Note: I had the biggest issue with this. Not eating rice is like going against thousands of years of discovery and innovation that allowed Asians to move from hunter/gatherer society to settle and farm with guaranteed sustenance, as well as create such important inventions like mochi, the rice paper on white rabbit candy, and fried rice. Making Asian food while excluding rice is like denying culture and eating a lie.}

* How do you make sauces with no simmering? Most recipes involved coconut milk (from fresh coconut or soaking shredded coconut and squeezing out the juice) mixed with various crushed spices.

{Note: I cheated. I did not buy all those expensive spices or make coconut milk. I bought a pre-made red curry sauce. I will buy those $1 bags of spices from World Market or choose from bulk containers at Rainbow Grocer when I have time. I don't like paying $7 for a jar of something when I only need a pinch.}

The result:

It's weird. Yes, I slightly deviated from the recipe... a lot. I couldn't find fresh pineapple so I bought crushed pineapple and mango chunks. I didn't realize the mango chunks came in mango juice which might have totally thrown off the taste of the dish.

Even without the deviation, I don't like the idea of cold, crunchy rice. Without cooking, I imagine most dishes to be cool and crunchy. I wouldn't mind a cold starter or cold dessert, but I'd prefer a warm main course. (Doesn't chinese medicine say things are best consumed warm or lukewarm?) The book's desserts received great reviews. I saw green tea ice cream and halo halo (Jbear's mom's favorite) which I'm excited to try for myself.

I don't think I could survive on a raw food diet. I like pastries and cookies and mac-n-cheese too much. I will try a few more recipes and try to do them right, but for now I have a giant dish of pineapple fried rice to consume in one day. Sigh, I want in-n-out.

It's here! It's here!

I'ts finally here!

Google finally made an official blogger app for the android!
Hurrah! No more spam (and air pushing, whoops I never posted that story see below*)!

Apparently, this happened in June?

I hope they add the ability to:
*move around images (that's why I prefer computer atm)
*insert videos from youtube (b/c I sure do that a lot)
*change fonts within a post
*look at the html

Fyi: There's also a google reader app.

-------------------------------------
*Have you heard of airpush?
http://www.airpush.com/

I recently started getting advertisements in my notifications section of my smartphone. That special area dedicated to letting you know when you have new messages, email, updates, etc. They set off my blinking notification light on my phone. A place that ads should definitely not be.

It's pretty easy to gloss over and ignore ads during games and when using apps. The only times I click on them is on accident. But this push advertising is sells the idea to developers and marketing departments of allowing brands to reach their full potential by making people like me actually look. Apparently, Facebook is working on allowing something similar by unfiltering the facebook feed (currently focused on your real friends) which allows advertisers to show up on your newsfeed more.
http://www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2011/08/facebooks-big-push-put-advertising-your-feed/40818/

I downloaded an app to uncover which app was the guilty culprit for allowing this nuisance... it was my blogger app. Go figure.

And now for something completely different...

I've been having some pretty weird dreams lately. Luckily, last night was the first non-24-ish night in a long while. It's amazing how a few episodes can really mess with your head. I had confirmation from a friend that 24 does induce strange dreams. I hope that season has passed.

Last night I dreamed I went to a fancy restaurant alone, ran into someone's parents and ate a 14 course meal with them until something happened (my brother wanted to play words with friends) and I couldn't find my car keys. I walked all around the block and couldn't find my car but did discover a school with nice indoor fountains. My brother led me to a Tropicana pool that was free and open to the public. (For clarification, it was a pool brought to you by Tropicana the company, not a pool filled with orange juice. That would just be an orange sticky mess on a hot day.) It was a glistening body of pure blue tranquility in an otherwise dusty, cement world. Yup, it was fenced off and right outside was the plainest of parking. My brother sure knows all the great places. I was very excited but lacked a bathing suit and really wanted to finish my extravagant meal.

So I walked back to restaurant to finish off the last 8 courses of my meal. Unfortunately, my eating mates had left and didn't ask for my last 8 courses to go. I asked but the restaurant people said they couldn't pack foam to-go. Geez, how are people supposed to get full off of 8 courses of foam? Boy was I peeved.

Then somehow I ended up backstage at a Taylor Swift concert. I might have been a roadie. And she might have been asking for the 8 courses of foam. Whatever will she eat now?

Simple song

According to Phil Collins, the best songs are simple.
Don't be witty. Don't confuse listeners.
Stick to the message.

Maybe that's why I like this one so much.

Center of the first world

I might not have that shiny new bike
all the cosmetics to give me a new face,
or afford to eat like a beast every meal.
But I'm still living
in the land of plenty.

Where did you sleep?

Kentucky has such diverse living situations.

3. Limited
Why is it when there is only one or a limited number or a new edition of something, bickering and unpleasant behavior ensues?

Exhibit 1: Update on the 33 Chilean miners that were trapped for 69 days in a mine last year. They collaborated underground, each taking on different roles, and inspiring the rest of the world. Then someone sent down a television. Just one.

Exhibit 2: The gods must be crazy. Remember this movie? Someone tosses a glass coke bottle out their window littering the Kalahari Desert. The peaceful bush people are unaware of civilized men and believe the gods put only good things on the earth. After finding the one bottle, people in the tribe start bickering over it, they decide the gods are crazy for giving them something that causes them to fight, and they decide to get rid of it.

Exhibit 3: Apple releases.

The saddest thing

[Note: This post may have disturbing images.]

Oddly restless, despite being tired, I am browsing old photos to delete and clear up space on my computer. Before I delete these, I figure I should at least share the sadness in my backyard. These photos were taken in 2008 at a Caltrain stop that I haven't been back to since.

There was metal netting strung across the underside of the freeway that many Caltrain riders sit under while waiting for their train. Most people might not look up, but I couldn't help being slightly horrified at the sight. Lively, flapping pigeons perching amongst the corpses of fellow former pigeons trapped in the wiring.

I assume the original intention of the net is to prevent pigeons from perching and pooping in the space (aka less cleanup). Unfortunately, it neither completely successfully prevents pigeons from perching and there is loss of pigeon life.

I'm not sure if anything has changed.

Plan B for puppies?

"I just thought you were the type of girl who knew when to say when."

-Juno

It happened. I suppose it was bound to happen with an non-neutered male and non-spayed female.
Dogs will be dogs, even if they are only puppies. It's every parent/dog owner's nightmare.
Yes, The-Puppy-Formerly-Known-As-Prince was discovered to be violating baby Sami.
He may now referred to as that dirty older dog.

Jbear told Franz if she gets pregnant, his dog is getting kicked out.

Oh Sami, we warned you. Don't let those big blue eyes and face licks sway you.
We told you to be firm and wait until you had all your shots so we could finally get you spayed before you were allowed to even be near other dogs.

But this one? Really?

Thus far that animal hasn't proved to be the brightest bulb in the pack, but maybe he's still adjusting to his new surroundings and will grow some brains later. Let's just hope he didn't do the deed properly or his swimmers aren't the bright either and took a wrong turn or something.

Someone is so getting neutered this week.

Getting a firm lecture from dad.

The puppy formally known as Prince

Uncle Franz got a friend for me the other day (I just wanted another bone). He is a husky/alaskan malamute mix with piercing blue eyes, furry upright ears and cmi says his fur is softer than the inside of her Uggs (whatever those are). When I first met him at his old home I thought he was kind of cute. His name was Prince and he sniffed me and nuzzled my nose.

But then we got to my home.

Can you believe that dog went straight for my food bowl and ate ALL of it? Are all boys like this? Man, I was saving that for later. He also drank three bowls of water. And started playing with all my toys without asking me.

What kind of rude guest is he?
After he was getting a little too comfortable I wanted to show him that he was on my territory and he should probably leave now. I ran and jumped all over like a kangaroo.
Apparently, he didn't get the hint.
Uncle Franz locked him up in his crate during the night and he spent the whole night whining. Yup. He shouldn't have drank so much water.

Today I got my head stuck in his mouth. I'm not sure if I like him yet.

Uncle Franz doesn't like the name "Prince" but still hasn't decided on a new one yet. So for now, he is the puppy formally known as Prince.

P.S. Did I ever tell you I was named after a girl from a tv show?

Everyone Knows, It's Butters!

Netflix has an On Demand collection of episodes from South Park featuring Butters.
Butters is probably my favorite character on the show.

He's nothing short of adorable. One episode he thought he was going to wreak havoc in the world and incite chaos by switching someone's soup order at Bennigan's. Unfortunately, that plan didn't work. Neither did trying to drown the world by leaving on his backyard hose.

Cheerful, innocent, gullible, and unfortunately prone to being tricked or used by Cartman.
The first episode in the collection was a Butters Show episode complete with theme song.

My favorite line is: "Thinks being yourself is the best thing to be?"
He sure gets picked on, rejected and put down, but yet he's always happy to be himself.

Everyone Knows, It's Butters!:
Who's the boy who can laugh at a storm cloud?
Turn a frown into a smile for free?
Who's the kid with the heart full of magic?
Everyone knows it's Butters!

Who's the boy with the eyes full of wonder?
Thinks being yourself is the best thing to be?
Who's that rascal with the tweezers in his pocket?
Everyone knows it's Butters!

Jumpin' in puddles, skippin' down the hallway
And he goes to petting zoos.
He loves John Elway

Who's the tyke with the cutest little dimples
Batting his eyes at every puppy he sees?
If you look inside yourself
You might be surprised when you find
A little boy named Butters!
