Sports injuries

A mighty roar of frustration echoed through the arena. Silence ensued. A stadium of spectators held their breaths in anticipation of his next move. His fists pounded the ground as he sat defeated on the ground.

Earlier this week I attended my first professional tennis match. I enjoy watching baseball, basketball, and football games, I can't participate in those sports and the crowds are rowdy and everyone has nicknames for different players they occasionally yell out in witty cheers. Tennis matches on television never struck me as terribly interesting. I am more amused watching the heads of spectators bob back and forth in synchronized motion as if part of a well-timed flash mob, without the fun dance moves. Tennis is kind of like that, everyone shows up at the same time, bob their heads and eyes to-and-fro for two and a half hours and then simultaneously scatters back to their daily lives.

I was either trying to decide my next move on words with friends or engrossed with eating my gordon-biersch garlic fries (which I could still taste the next morning, they are very powerful) when I heard his cry. Needless to say, I did not see what happened and I mindlessly wrote it off as another celebrity diva moment. He missed the ball and was now throwing a fit. Typical.

But that's not how it went. I wish the stadium screen showed replays, like on television, with ample commentary. From what I heard, he seemed to have rolled on his ankle while running toward the ball. This was unfortunate. Stream of sympathetic thoughts followed.

What if he injured himself horribly just running, this wasn't making the game-winning hit or running from a rampant bear with rabies. It was during a simple act that could have happened anytime of the day. One injury could cost a career. This is his livelihood. He deserves to be yelling in agony (and disrupting my game of scrabble). Could you imagine spending a quarter of your life practicing for a sport only to be injured and told you could no longer work in your current profession? Goodbye contracts, major source of income, and current lifestyle. I suppose all athletes run this risk. A simple trip, hit, bump, roll of the ankle could be the end of the life you currently know. But this could happen to anyone- a car crash, a ski accident, a rampant bear with rabies... the end of the life you currently know. (Actually, there is a vaccine for rabies, but not for what an angry bear might do to you.)

As my mind wandered, someone joined Roddick on the court and taped his ankle. In football, the moment someone does not stand up after a play, a ready team of physicians and help rush to the field. By rush, I mean they really do run with haste. In tennis, after five minutes, someone with a big bag finally walked across the court to join the lonely player.

He didn't make a spectacle. He didn't roll around on the ground clutching his injured limb with tears of pain streaming down his cheeks. He sat. Then he climbed up on his injured ankle while the crowd cheered him forward. Onward ho. His step was a bit slower and wobbly as he regained his footing. Though he lost that one round, he came back in full force with his 135mph serves and sheer effort. He chased after every ball no matter how far he would have to run on his taped ankle.

I can see how people can look up to athletes as role models. Each game can result in so many stories. I am glad there are so many photographers to catch each moment. Being a top player requires the motivation and discipline most commoners lack.

Yes, he won the game.
No, I did not win my game of scrabble. I suppose it's not fair to blame a finger injury.

Thoughts?

I'm beginning to think I am getting too wordy.
Personal thoughts should go in a personal journal.
I want to take pictures and share inspiration and things that inspire me to smile.

I go through many phases and each one ends up as a new blog.
Just to buffer myself from being too loquacious I picked an obnoxious font.

Should I completely switch over, turn this one private, run two alongside?

Let me know what you think.

DIY gold chain rings

I stumbled upon a DIY blog and instead of just pinning every project on pinterest for another day,
I actually attempted something.

A thin gold chain ring.
Tutorial here.

{Supplies}
chain | enclosure | pliers
Thanks Michaels for your $5 off $5 coupon. This craft ended up costing me $1.06 and I have material to spare! I will attempt something more intricate next time when I have a craft buddy.

I am only one charm away from making this.

the house

For Onsie Night in SF,
Annie suggested dinner with her coworkers at an Asian fusion restaurant called "the house".

Instead of bread rolls, they have pickled cucumber that tasted like (my) home.
(I don't know about your home, but my mom makes delicious pickled cucumber.)
Annie and I shared the seabass and flatiron steak because yelp said to do so.
We listened. I am glad we listened.

I'm not sure why people give skeptical looks when I say Asian fusion,
it was spectacular.

Waste Land Perspective

I watched the documentary Waste Land last night.
Half watching, half surfing the internet and doing laundry, but probably a third into the movie I dropped everything and just watched.
Perspective.

Waste Land Trailer. 2010.
The documentary follows a couple different people that work picking out recyclable material in the largest landfill in the world outside of Rio, Brazil. They were each beautiful, good-natured and geniune. Though the work is physically demanding and others may shun such a job because they are digging through garbage and get on the bus smelling like garbage, they all talked about dignity. An artist recruits some of them to create portraits of themselves using the materials they collect each day. Images of the creations are auctioned and shown in museums and the money goes back to the people.

One woman with beautiful skin talked about a recent breakup. She teared up. My heart moved with her. The interviewer made a comment about well, you make good money. She said US$20-25 a day. Sephora.com was open on my browser and I'm pretty sure a large chunk of the products on that site cost more than she makes in a day. A bottle of perfume that costs 4 days wages? Yikes. Money can't buy her beauty.

Each individual ended up working at the landfill for various reasons. During the movie you can see the people transform. A sense of empowerment. Realizing, despite what discouragement they received in the past, they can do something great. Art has that kind power.

DIY Sock Bun

I can't believe this works. But it does!

Do you have any lonely socks that lost it's identical brother?
I save mine in a laundry bag that is getting bigger and bigger.
If you have medium to long hair, snip off the end of the sock, roll it into a donut,  put your hair in a ponytail and from the end wrap your hair around the donut and make a sock bun!

I quickly tried it out last night and snapped this with my phone.
I used a regular white sock (as you can see)
but the tutorial suggests using a sock color similar to your hair color.
I think if you actually put some effort into it and maybe use some product it could be clean and symmetrical (no fly aways). Easy DIY hair for the bridal party?

P.S. If you have white hair and need a sock- I have plenty.

Three things for February

I have so many pictures on my cameras to upload. There were so much photo-taking over the weekend I had to switch cameras when one ran out of battery. Yikes! I better migrate more things over to the external.

I believe I am a fan of Valentines day... but for all the wrong reasons. Who doesn't like hearts and the color pink and nerdy valentines (You're hot like capsaicin! Goodness, I didn't even have to think to get that one.) and seeing heart-shaped balloons and starbucks cards with pretty designs and cheap chocolate the day after... see where I'm going?

So here are some happy things to get you ready for the month of February.

1. All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps

Have you seen the Danny and Annie animated short?

StoryCorps aim is to collect stories from everyday life, I believe they set up a recording booth in Grand Central. Little gems from ordinary people. I love hearing bits on the radio. This book will focus on some love stories that were reported. Too bad the tour isn't passing through the bay.

To be released: Tomorrow, February 2!
Website.

2. Cafe Fantasia

I tried a new drink in SF before my morning drive back home.

Mocha + Almond Flavoring

It might be my new green tea latte.

3a. Garden of Love Forever Stamps
Buy now.

3b. Jason Wu for Target

I couldn't help adding this in too.

I am a sucker for ruffles and pleats. I really like these Target collaborations.
Can you ever have too many dresses?
I think not.

Keep posted for more.
